On the first day of school, August 26, members of the Greenhill community gathered to dedicate the new Jennifer Goodnight Maalouf ’86 field.
The field honors Greenhill alumna, Jennifer Goodnight Maalouf, class of 1986. Jennifer attended Greenhill for 12 years starting in pre-school. She was involved in field hockey and soccer, cheerleading, on the Homecoming court, in addition to the National Honor Society and the French National Honor Society, the Science Club, and the features co-editor of the Evergreen. As an alumnus from the class of ’87 wrote, “I bet you could not find another student that portrayed Greenhill’s principles of honor, respect, and compassion more than Jennifer did.”
Jennifer died in a car accident in 1998, along with her husband Nagy Maalouf and their unborn child. To honor Jennifer’s spirit and the impact she had as a friend, classmate, athlete and Greenhill student, members of her class made a significant leadership gift to the Building Community Campaign to name this field for Jennifer.
Guests included Jennifer’s family, parents Margaret and Jim Goodnight; her sister, Susan Goodnight Griffiths ’83 and husband Evan Griffiths and alumni friends. Coleen McCulley Gorman ‘75, Jennifer’s Field Hockey Coach, attended along with current Greenhill faculty, former teachers, parents of alumni and special friends.
Speaking on behalf of the Class of 1986, Lael Iozzo Brodsky ’86, shared that she could feel Jennifer’s spirit on the field, and she hoped that every student that played on the field would be inspired by the life she led.
Jim Goodnight, Jennifer’s father, expressed his appreciation for the experiences and relationships that had grown from his daughter’s time at Greenhill. He said “Jennifer loved field hockey, and she loved Greenhill School. This is the perfect way to remember her and celebrate her life.”
Following the dedication, the Varsity Field Hockey team played the first match of the season on the field.
The field, located on the corner of Spring Valley and Midway Roads, was installed over the summer as a part of the School’s Building Community Campaign and will be used for field hockey, soccer, and lacrosse, as well as Middle School softball and baseball.
